Congratulations to Leo Battles–the most recent Student of the Month. Though a freshman; Leo is known throughout the school. A quiet and studious kid, you would be surprised that this guy is involved in many athletic teams, as well as clubs taking up much of his time outside of school. When asked how he balances these demands, Leo kept it simple: “I’m only really in three school activities—sailing, basketball and chess club—but I try to stay consistent and committed to them.” This dedication has paid off, with Leo traveling with the sailing team to regattas almost every weekend and participating in most basketball games during the season.
Leo’s commitment does not stop at athletics—he is also excelling in academics. His favorite subject is math, where he has found inspiration from Mr. Kennedy, “Mr. Kennedy is a great teacher and has really helped my academic journey,” Leo shared. His love for problem-solving and numbers motivates Leo to stay on top–even with his other demands. This thinking serves him well in the realm of chess, where Leo thrives in the strategic environment. The chess club is where Leo spends his Tuesday afternoons, and has become a significant part of his school life. With three members heading to state competitions this year, the team has been making a name for itself. Though not one of the lucky three, Leo has been excelling, and credits much of his success to Lamai Hons, the local champion and team captain. “Lamai has been a role model for me ever since he came to this school in sixth grade. He is incredibly smart and talented at so many things outside of school,” Leo said.
Beyond the chessboard, Leo’s passion for sailing has taken him far. “Sailing is one of my favorite activities because it creates so many new opportunities. Just this year, sailing let me tour two colleges,” Leo explained. With regattas almost every weekend, and practice weekly, he spends countless hours on the water, making sure he can win. Just like basketball; Leo is dedicated–and it shows.
From late-night study sessions, shooting on the court, sailing in heavy breezes, and playing chess, Leo does it all with determination. One thing is clear about this man: Leo Battles is committed. Congratulations on being our Student of the Month.
