This fall will bring a great moment for our school as it proudly launches a girls-only soccer team for Orcas Island High School. Fueled by the passion and determination of female athletes eager to showcase their perseverance and skills, this new team aims to create a supportive and empowering environment for girls in sports. The team not only promises to bring competitive spirit to the field, but also hopes to inspire future generations of female athletes.
Many female students struggle with the lack of opportunities for women’s sports in the school, as there aren’t a lot of sports teams for women, and the only ones that do exist are often overcrowded and leave a large number of players sitting on the sidelines. With the startup of this new team, many players are excited to support each other and participate in competitive soccer.
The support from the school board for approving the team was not just present—it was enthusiastic. “The school board is super excited,” said Cienna Richardson, a student involved in the effort to bring the team to life. “Everyone at the meeting was very enthusiastic… and invested in making it happen.”
Cienna, who will also serve as the School Board Student Representative, said the process highlighted how much the school values student voices. “It really demonstrated what a great, supportive school system we have,” she said. “I can’t wait to see how the team grows.”
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Players are already forming strong bonds as they prepare for their first season together. Sophomore Chloe Anderson-Cleveland shared how much the team has already meant to her: “It’s a way for girls to get together and be active… and make meaningful friendships.” Even though many team members come from different backgrounds, Chloe said they’re coming together over a shared passion. “We all have a common interest that brings us together.”
Looking ahead, Chloe is especially eager for the challenges that come with competing. “I’m excited for the fall season… and to see how the team does against other schools,” she said. “The potential this team has is huge.”
For junior Lucia Rios, the energy and motivation of the team are what stand out the most. “We’re serious, we’re motivated, and we’re ready to work hard,” she said. “Just because it’s our first year doesn’t mean we’re not here to compete.”
Lucia also spoke about the spirit of teamwork that’s already forming. “It’s honestly been so fun and inspiring,” she said. “Even the little things like our Sunday practices feel huge.”
As the team trains over the summer and prepares for their first official games this fall, one thing is clear: Orcas Island High School’s new girls’ soccer team isn’t just a new sports program. It’s a symbol of student-led change, community support, and the start of something special.
