This year was remarkable for the high school sailing team. Not only are they district champions in team racing, but are also the first team in the Pacific Northwest to ever go to two nationals: fleet racing and team racing.
This year, the team consists of 11 members: one senior, seven juniors, two freshmen, and one eighth grader. The first national event, fleet racing, took place in Houston, Texas. Six representatives of the team competed with 19 other teams and earned 18th place. The second event, team racing, took place in San Diego. The team took last in this competition, but still got 12th in the nation. Point Loma High School from San Diego won both events.
“Having the opportunity to learn from some of the best sailors in the nation is a whole new experience that will continue to make our district better,” said Maggie Toombs, the team’s only senior and co-captain with junior Ronan Rankin.
