Pope Leo XIV

Recently, Catholics and people of many faiths worldwide experienced a tragedy: Pope Francis, who had served as Pope since March 13, 2013, passed away suddenly due to health issues. He had attracted much attention from not only people of his church, but members of nearly every following (including atheists) with an unorthodox approach to his papacy. His views on the war in Gaza as well as his acceptance of the queer community drew criticism and praise alike. His controversy made him popular. After his death, a new pope was elected relatively quickly, announced by the traditional white smoke pouring from the Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, emerged to great cheers from the thousands gathered outside. At 69 years old, he is on the younger side for a new pope. Leo XIV will be the first pope hailing from the United States. Born in Chicago and boasting a history of international travel, missionary activity in Peru, and a powerful position as archbishop in the church, it is easy to understand why the cardinals would elect him. But at the forefront of everyone’s mind is the question: will Pope Leo continue Pope Francis’ legacy of progressivism and change, or will the Catholic Church regress into its more traditional, old fashioned patterns?

So far, it seems as though Pope Leo will be walking a more moderate path than his predecessor. Many news platforms reporting on his history remark on his quiet personality and soft-spoken manner. In a time of global tumult and polarizing politics, it looks like the Pope will be taking a mellow, watered down stance. This is not to say Pope Leo has not clearly stated his beliefs; He has denounced the Gaza war and called for a ceasefire, and demanded humanitarian aid for suffering citizens. Additionally, he criticizes artificial intelligence as such: “Developments in the field of artificial intelligence pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor.” However, on the most contentious subjects he has chosen moderation.

Pope Leo XIV has stated clearly that he does not agree with “The homosexual lifestyle,” continuing on to criticize the ideals of gay marriage and access to abortion. His personal beliefs align with traditional values: the idealized marriage of a man and woman, and their children. He also takes a conservative stance on abortion, defending barely conceived DNA with the idea that all life is sacred. Although his own beliefs conflict with the progressivism Pope Francis led the church with, it appears Pope Leo will continue to lead according to his duties and stated values, values which apply to all of humanity: “Respect and dignity for every person.”

While those who identify with principals of left side politics and the liberal party may feel concern over Pope Leo XIV’s disapproval of the LGBTQIA+ community and the ethics of the pro-choice party, they may take comfort in the clear statement given by Pope Leo demanding respect and dignity. While he may not agree with these things, he believes he has no right to discriminate, and a duty to protect and include all people.
